Tucked away in California’s Sierra Nevadas, just East of the ever-pleasant Bakersfield is “California’s Best Kept Secret,” Lake Isabella!!!
Having never been there or ever hearing about it, I packed the ol’ RV and went with the lovely Kelly Parker. The only information we had was an awkward tip on a hot spring:
“Remington Springs – In Kern County, just south of Lake Isabella off highway 78. From Hobo campground (also Miracle Hot Springs) drive 2.5 miles south on old highway 78 until you see a telephone pole in the middle of a large turnout area on the right side of the road. Park there and follow the trails straight down to the river. Right next to the river is this large cement tub filled with steaming sulfury hot water.”
It is completely wrong BTW, but after asking several truckers and grocery store clerks, we ended up there. I forgot my swimsuit so I had to hang out in my fluorescent green butt-huggers (a little embarrassing).
We got to meet the local color there and drink some fine spirits. Afterwards, smelling of rotten eggs, we made our way to the local saloon and played several mean games. We then found our way back in the (very) pitch black to the infamous Hobo Campground.
Here is a very short photo essay. I got hit in the head and have a slight concussion now, so my vision is a bit blurry and I’m not functioning at 100%. Enjoy.

As a part of The Center For Improved Living, I offer to take over people’s jobs for a day. They stay home and I go to work for them, whatever their job is.
Just a few months ago, I had a raffle at a contemporary art fair. About 50 people left thier business card in hopes of a day off. I just drew two names at random and it looks like I’ll be subbing for an administrative assistant at the Musuem of Contemporary Art and filing in for an attorney.
Wish me luck, and if you live in the Los Angeles area and want a day off, send me an e-mail with your contact info and I’ll have another raffle at the end of the month.
I’l try to get some video of my experiences.
