Call The Neapolitan Hotline

6

For some reason seeing this little set-up at the swap-meet reminded me of an old project I’d like to do – The Neapolitan Hotline.

I’d go to as many grocery stores as I could and put a sticker on all of the Neapolitan ice cream boxes (or tubs, bars, etc.) that reads:

“Having trouble deciding which flavor to eat first? Please call The Neapolitan Hotline at 510.872.7326 for free professional advice. Thanks.”

I wonder how many people would call?

I personally always cut off the strawberry portion and give it to someone else, then I eat the vanilla, and by the time I get to the chocolate it’s sort of a mess.

You?

Disclaimer: I couldn’t really help out with the freeze-dried stuff they sell at the NASA gift shop; you’d have to call Neil Armstrong for that.

Marc, I agree with getting rid of the strawberry section. I let my girlfriend eat that part and the chocolate mess. I stick with the vanil with only a half of a scoop of Choc. Too much and you get light brown like the old Light Brown M & M’s that never made sense.

Hey Marc, what is up with this talk about neopolitian ice cream,I realize that it is fascinating and somhow always has been to the American psyche-really I think the history of it is more important did you know:

‘Neapolitan Ice Cream,’ refers to a block of ice cream composed of layers of different flavors, usually chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. (The term Neapolitan is also used to refer to any molded dessert that is made with 3 layers.)

The ice cream makers of Naples, Italy were famous in the early 19th century, especially Tortoni, who created many layered ice cream cakes.

Natives of Naples, Italy are known as Neapolitans.
The term Neapolitan Ice Cream originated in the U.S. in the late 19th century, and is presumably a reference to the 3 layered ice cream cakes of Tortoni, a Neapolitan.

And it seems that quite a few folks are equally obsessed with the freeze dried variety. Which I once obtained from Cape Canaveral for my own space voyages. It has a wonderful feel when it melts in your mouth, kinda like a creamy stale marshmello.

yeah, Neapolitan ice cream is also the 3rd or 5th most popular ice cream in America, depending which source you are looking at. I really don’t eat a whole lot of it in SF.

Eat all chocolate first, then stir up the vanilla & strawberry together. Perfect!

I’d love to try that!!! I think people need more help than they even know, so I’ll bet there are lots of replies.
