The Press Release for the Hayward Show

0

For immediate release

Marc Horowitz
The Centre for Improved Living
The Hayward Project Space
18 March – 13 April 2008

Feeling a bit flat? Life in a mess? Then The Centre for Improved Living at The Hayward is for you. Starting in March, American artist and comedian Marc Horowitz will transform the Project Space into his extraordinary Centre. There Horowitz will install a DIY television set where he will broadcast Me & You, a live talk show filmed and broadcast on the web and Southbank Centre’s website. Me & You will be taped three days a week (Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday), featuring a variety of guests, musical interludes, pre-taped segments and activities. Each show will address a common topic, taken from Horowitz’s TCFIL blog, such as “persuasion,” “distractions” and “messing up.”

When Me & You is not taping, Marc will be on hand for the duration of the show to host workshops at The Center. Workshops offered will include “How to start your own live talk show,” “Ways to get in a better mood” and “How to make killer sandwiches.” Past episodes of Me & You will also be available for viewing.

Horowitz’s work thrives on a makeshift, DIY aesthetic. His props, objects and ideas encourage exchanges of laughter, provocation, problem-solving and, ultimately, improved living. From a swap shop ‘trading post’ to one-on-one life coaching sessions, Horowitz is committed to life enhancement as an artform and describes The Centre For Improved Living as “a collaboration, a think tank, a place to daydream, a place to ‘shake it off,’ and a place to embrace individuality and the idea that the world around us is a place of infinite possibilities.”

Horowitz’s recent projects include The National Dinner Tour. While working as a photo assistant, Marc wrote “Dinner w/ Marc 510-872-7326” (his name and REAL cell phone number) on a dry-erase board featured in a home office shoot for a Crate & Barrel catalogue. The catalogue containing his personal invitation to dinner was mailed out to millions across the USA. Immediately his phone started ringing from curious callers. For over a year, Marc travelled the country wining and dining with the respondants. This eventually lead to People Magazine naming him one of their ’50 Most Eligible Batchelors.’

To take part, come and meet Marc in The Centre for Improved Living at the Hayward Project Space.

ADDITIONAL NOTE:
Every Sunday, TCFIL will be doing “The Floor is Yours!” Basically, Marc will open the make-shift television studio he’s created, using 3 VHS cameras and video mixers from the early 90s, to the public. London’s first Public Access? Indeed! Folks will be able to use the studio to film and broadcast their own show. Here’s how it works. Marc will have a sign-up sheet at the Hayward Gallery where folks can sign up for 15-30 minute slots. They will come in on Sunday and Marc, managing all the tech stuff, will broadcast LIVE on the You & Me Talk Show web channel, which by the way is http://www.ustream.tv/channel/meandyou. This is the same address I will broadcast my show every Wednesday and Saturday at 4:30 – 5:30 and Friday from 7:30 – 8:30.

Time Machine Unveiling on President’s Day!

1

Time Travel Machine!

In celebration of President’s Day, my local seafood restauranteur, Ray Fresca of Shrimps & More, put on a demonstration of the time machine he’s been working on since he saw a double feature of “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure” and “Back to the Future II.”  He explained that his motivation for its construction was to meet Abraham Lincoln (as they did on Bill & Ted). Ray aptly named his creation, “Captain Time Traveler” or “C.a.T.T.” and unveiled it in his vacant banquet hall.

Pictured is Tina Ferris (daughter of Tom & Gina Ferris) and her cat, Meowrok 8000, ready to fly through space and time to give Lincoln a little surprise visit!

We didn’t let Ray know it didn’t really work. We just hit the lights whenever someone got inside and they ran and hid under that podium thing in the background. Ray was pretty drunk on Zima by the end of the event, too.

a couple things

0

1) smoldering is a funny word

2) Here’s a suggestion on how to answer unwanted e-mails (spam, ex-lovers, etc) in the future:

Hello,

I broke my leg and won’t be able to do any of this!! It makes me so mad to because I really wanted to make it all happen. Dammit!

Sincerely,
(your name here)

and 3) Does anyone want to sublet my place from mid-March through mid-April? It is a rad place! Free Costco TP! Let me know if you are interested. It costs me $ 1366 a month, but I’d be willing to drop the price a bit as I know that is a lot. Has great views and a big kitchen and a sofa and a TV and cable and internets and a shower and a toilet and 2 sinks!!! that’s right TWO SINKS!!!

sink 1
sink 2
(p.s. neither of those are actually my sinks though, I was too lazy to take pics of my sinks for you. sorry)

Upcoming Show at the Hayward Gallery! Interested in being a part of it?

2

To coincide with Laughing in a Foreign Language, artist and comedian Marc Horowitz presents his extraordinary Centre for Improved Living, an open workshop featuring sculptures, videos, performance, life-coaching and conversation with the artist. Addressing a diverse range of subjects from architectural environments, advertising and commerce to happiness and power, Horowitz’s project thrives on a makeshift, DIY aesthetic. Using props, objects and ideas, Horowitz encourages and facilitates exchanges of laughter, provocation, problem-solving and improved ways of living.

— written by the good people at the Hayward

——

The show opens on March 18th and goes until April 13th. I am planning on doing a talk show in the gallery – have three talk shows a week each lasting an hour with 2-3 guests. Each show would have a topic, taken from thecenterforimprovedliving.blogspot.com daily questions. I would loosely address this topic or question with each of the guests as we do an activity related to the topic. I also plan to have several workshops.

I am looking for the following people to help out, the time commitment is totally up you and we can discuss it.

1) guests to be on the show
2) camera people to run cameras
3) some internet tech savvy folks to make this a live webcast and help with the website
4) a sound technician
5) set builders/ environmental designers
6) creatives who are interested in making props
7) writers to help with some of the guest questions and interstitial segments.
8) A producer/ publicist to help line-up guests
9) some general help

Everyone would get credit and have an opportunity to say they showed at the Hayward! I really see this as a nice community of people coming together and creating something about the real people of London, not just a bunch of celebrity pop-culture bullshit.

If you or someone you know would be interested in this project please e-mail me at ineedtostopsoon at gmail dot com.

I have also posted this on gumtree.com – http://www.gumtree.com/cgi-bin/show_posting.pl?posting_id=18491870

Thanks!
